Grain storage technology in flexible plastic bags

A large experience accumulated by the Company provides grain and feeding stuffs undamaged condition of our Clients in different regions of Ukraine. Our own experience of using this equipment lets us offer the most competitive terms of implementing this technology to our Clients.


The Essence of the Technology:


The main principle of the air-proof storage is oxygen elimination from the bag for insects, pests and fungi deactivation. In any kind of grain there exist biotic components: fungus, insects, micro germs and so on. But this negative phenomenon has its positive side: during respiratory processes oxygen (O2) is used and carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced. As a result, the plastic bag inner microclimate changes and becomes unfavorable for pests development, and since the bag’s air-tightness prevents air penetration, this effect is securely kept during the whole period of storage. Consequently, one may state that the air-proof storage system equals the bags grain storage action – storage of dry grain in the modified atmosphere, with low oxygen content and high carbon dioxide content. This modified atmosphere reduces biologic activity within grain mass (insects, fungi, seeds, and grain), which is the main reason for temperature increasing.


Advantages of the Technology:


1.   Investment:


It is a low-cost system with small investments. The only injection is to purchase relatively inexpensive equipment, plastic bags for storage, and preparation a place for breaking ground.


There is no need to invest money in the valuable construction.

2.   Technological:

It helps avoid forced harvesting breaks, which often occur because of lacking room in the storehouses, on the roofed-in barn-floors and because of lacking transport for agricultural production removal from under the combine harvester.


It gives opportunity to store not only dry grain, but also the grain with excessive moisture content.


There no need to transport grain to the elevator.


Sorted-out grain is stored.


No depersonalized grain under storage.

 3.  Financial:

Exclusion of expenditures on elevator grain storage (15-35% grain price).


Cutting down transport expenses.


No grain depersonalization and grain quality evaluation, marked down by the elevators (price loss).


Getting the grain of higher quality at the output (price profit) due to after-harvesting post-ripening in the bags.

Necessary equipment and materials

For grain bagging one will need:

Three-layer flexible plastic bags;

Machine for grain bagging (Bagger);

Tractor (type MTZ-80(82));

Grain loader or reloader with a tractor.


Machine for unloading grain from the bags (Unloader).  


3.  For grain unloading from the bag – unloading machine (Unloader), providing bag scissoring with simultaneous lateral unloading and rolling the waste plastic film.

However, due to the fact that the reloaders application for grain transportation from combine harvesters is not spread in Ukraine, one can load grain into the Bagger with the help of hydraulic sideboards or grain loaders ZM-60/ZM-80.

Peculiarities of the Technology

Technology application presupposes the following procedures: grain conveyance, grain bagging and subsequent grain unloading from the bags. In Argentina for these aims one can use:


1. For conveyance -   storage grain reloaders with tractors attached, providing grain transportation from the combine harvesters to the loading place and subsequent loading into the grain packaging machine.


2. For grain loading into the bag – grain packaging machines (Baggers), operating on tractor’s PTO.


3.  For grain loading into the receiving hopper of the Bagger – reloader.


4. For grain unloading from the bag – unloading machine (Unloader), providing bag scissoring with simultaneous lateral unloading and rolling the waste plastic film.


However, due to the fact that the reloaders application for grain transportation from combine harvesters is not spread in Ukraine, one can load grain into the Bagger with the help of hydraulic sideboards or grain loaders ZM-60/ZM-80.


And for grain loading into the bag we offer Baggers R-9 for 9 feet bags, and R-10 for 10 feet bags manufactured by the «Richiger» Company.


For grain feeding and loading it into the loading machine we offer the latest: reloader T-22R, the batch production of which began in February 2010.


Economic Efficiency


Bags storage economic benefit:

1.   As compared to the operating income, achieved from grain after its elevator storage, the gross return increases by:

more than 27% - if during storage period the grain doesn’t improve its quality characteristics to the 3rd class level;

more than 50% - if during storage period the grain improves its quality characteristics to the 3rd class level;

2.   Rate of investments payback is 1 day! Bagging only 700 tons is sufficient!

      Due to a mathematic model a multi-factor analysis of 2 storage methods was carried out – elevator and bags, and the abovementioned technologies efficiency evaluation was received.

      In the modeling the following reference conditions were applied:

1.      storage type – elevator or bags;

2.      storage period – from July 2008 to April 2009;

3.      storable crop on dispatch for storage - wheat 4th class 2nd group with moisture content and impurity content according to All-Union State Standard;

4.     the possibility of class improvement (3rd class 2nd group) due to after-harvesting grain post-ripening;

5.     terms of purchase: prices and terms offered by the «Astarta Group» company in 2009;

6.      terms of acceptance and elevator storage - data -«Novomyrgorod - Agrocontract» for April 2009;

7.      taking down of weight – reduction of grain weight due to the average rate of moisture content, refining and so on when handing over from the elevator. The taking down is assumed at 2%.

8.      terms of delivering to the elevator – average delivery prices for the distance of up to 20 km at the Ukrainian road transport services market  during harvesting season 2008-2009;

9.   terms of delivery to the buyer in the trade – delivery by the own transport which is not engaged in any other work is calculated;

10. investment expenses – cost of a minimal equipment kit, providing hourly loading rate of about 80-100 tons.

Application Experience

The home country of grain bags storage technology is Argentina. The existing storage structures (elevators, barn floors, warehouses and so on) were not always affordable for the majority of farmers because of required initial investments and lack of credits. Beginning from late 90s, the farmers adapted the traditional humid grain storage system for dry grain storage in order to solve the existing problem. Nowadays 25 million tons and more of wheat, maize, soybean and sunflower are stored according to this technology in Argentina annually.

Risk level changes taking into account grain moisture content, normal aging of bag and the possibility of its damaging by external agents. These risk evaluations are approximate, not absolute, and may vary depending on the situation. As a rule, the level of risk increases with the   raise of environment temperature, and conversely.

A rich experience of the manufacturers who applied this system for seed grain storage, suitable for planting, proves the undamaged condition of their quality after several months of storage.


Taking care of bags filled with grain or fodder

The success if this system is closely connected with taking care of bags; for this purpose it is necessary to monitor them from time to time and immediately glue the gaps that may happen.

The beginning of a good usage and taking care of bags is the place choice, a good drainage, absence of foreign matters, wire, stones and stubble remains, which may cause the gap.

Different problems may occur, but each of them can be predicted or controlled. Here are the most effective methods:

    -         Crippling of the bag

In case the gaps are disclosed, they should be glued up immediately. It is recommended that the specialist monitoring the bags always had some adhesive tape with him; for clearing small damages one can use sealing foam.

Nowadays there are rather effective self-adhesive seals at the market. They must be applied on the ground and on the bottom part of the bag, but their usability term is from one month up to 45 days under the normal conditions, and the rainfall washes them off.

-         Protection against the rodents

It is necessary to avoid grain spillage over the ground, because it attracts the animals.

There are various rodents’ stoppers with different degrees of effectiveness – traps and some others, but, perhaps, the best one is to destroy the holes as soon as they are discovered. Very often the ends of the bag are treated with rodenticide.

It is also important not to let the weeds grow on the storage ground. For this purpose it is recommended to treat it with glyphosate.

It is not recommended to use sulfur-containing products for deratization, because they can cause the bags disintegration.

-         Hail:

Large hails can break through the bags. After the hailstorm it is necessary to monitor the bags as quickly as possible, and in case the harm is very big, one should reload the grain into a new bag or sell.

If the bag stretches beyond measure during the loading, the risk of damaging by hail increases. That is why it is necessary to control the bag’s stretching while loading the bag.

For hail protection one can cover the bags with a polyethylene film left after bags unpacking during last loading. If small bag damage occurs one can glue it up with a special tape.

-         Danger of fire:

Wheat stubble remains are very inflammable, that is why it is recommended to put them out around the bags in order to prevent fire spreading.

-         Stealing and purposeful wrecking:

Taking minimal precautionary steps as for the bags location area, one can avoid this problem.
